Sonic Welding         What is Sonic Welding? In sonic welding, two smooth surfaces of thermoplastics are placed against each other with a force applied. The joint is then subjected to powerful ultrasonic sound waves. The surfaces of plastic vibrate at great speed. The friction between the two surfaces generates heat, raising the temperature of the plastic surfaces above their melting point. The plastic surfaces melt, flow together, and cool to a strong smooth bond. This entire process only requires a fraction of a second.
